What is a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)?

A donor-advised fund, often called a DAF, is a simple and tax-smart way to make charitable donations to organizations like Inspiration Ranch.

A DAF works much like a charitable giving account. Donors wanting to establish a DAF create an account with a sponsoring organization (ex. Fidelity Charitable) and contribute cash, stocks, or other assets into the fund that is then invested and grows the DAF (any investment growth is tax-free.) Contributions to your DAF are tax-deductible donations.

Why Give Through a DAF

Many families use donor-advised funds to simplify their giving, organize charitable donations in one place, and create a lasting legacy for causes they love. There are many reasons to give through a DAF, but speak to your financial advisor to find out if creating a DAF is right for you.

  • Immediate tax deduction

  • Time for grant-making

  • Low-cost

  • Ease of use

  • Gifts of non-cash assets

  • Investment growth

  • Potential for anonymity

  • Simplification of record-keeping

  • Family involvement

Rules on DAF Gifts

While donor-advised funds are a powerful and flexible way to give, there are important IRS rules that must be followed.

DAF gifts cannot be used to provide any goods, services, or benefits of tangible value to the donor or anyone designated by the donor. This means your grant must be made with no expectation of personal benefit in return.

Examples of what a DAF can’t be used for:

  • Event tickets, galas, or sponsorships that include benefits (such as meals, gifts, or reserved seating)

  • Auction purchases or items received in exchange for payment

  • Memberships that include tangible benefits (such as discounted services or exclusive access)

  • Tuition, fees, or payments for services received

Any donation where the donor receives goods or services in return

Important Reminder

To remain compliant with IRS regulations, donors should ensure that no portion of a DAF grant provides personal benefit. Please reach out if you have any questions regarding DAF gift acceptance.
